Install CentOS using the net install disk.

Log into your box and first remove CUPS:

yum remove cups avahi bluez-libs cups-libs desktop-file-utils kudzu portmap ppp selinux-policy selinux-policy-targeted wpa_supplicant 

We are going to use Atomic repository for PHP, MySQL and alike, because CentOS ships with the very old version of PHP.

wget -q -O - | sh
Enable Plesk repository? (y/n) [Default: n]: n

Install PHP and MySQL

yum install php mysql mysql-server php-mysql php-bcmath php-cli php-common php-devel \ 
php-gd php-imap php-mbstring php-mcrypt php-mhash php-pdo php-pear php-soap php-tidy \
php-xml php-xmlrpc

Run Apache and mysql when started

chkconfig --level 35 httpd on
chkconfig --level 35 mysqld on

Disable SELinux

Download the latest version of Webmin from


Install Webmin

rpm -i webmin-1.470-1.noarch.rpm

Download Virtualmin as a Webmin module from

Kill iptables so we can access our Webmin installation at http://YOUR-IP-ADDRESS:10000

Log into Webmin with username root and roots password.

Select Webmin → Webmin Configuration → Webmin Modules and install the Virtualmin module.

Select Servers → Virtualmin Virtual Servers (GPL) and click on the Module Config at the top of the page and look for the section Webmin modules available to server administrators.

Disable everything except Apache Webserver (for virtual host), MySQL Database Server (for database) & Webalizer Logfile Analysis (for website's logs) and Save.

Click on the Edit Server Temapltes button and the select Default Settings.

Edit template section: Apache website, look for Automatically add appropriate SuExec directive? and select No and Save.

Select Un-used ModulesWebalizer Logfile Analysis and select to install module using Yum.

Click on ServersVirtualmin Virtual Servers (GPL) again and click on the Features and plugins icon and deselect everything except:

  • Apache website
  • Log file rotation
  • MySQL database
  • Webmin login
  • Webalizer reporting

Save the settings.

If you get an error stating Failed to save enabled features : MySQL does not appear to be installed and running on your system, or has not yet been set up properly in Webmin's MySQL Database module. If your system does not use MySQL, it should be disabled in Virtualmin's module configuration page.. Click on the MySQL Database and click on the Start MySQL server, return to Virtualmin and repeat the previous step.

Click on the Re-check and refresh configuration on the main page of the Virtualmin module and you should get a message your system is ready for use by Virtualmin..

Install vsftpd

yum install vsftpd

edit /etc/vsftpd/vstfpd.conf and add this line to the end of the file


then edit /etc/vsftpd/user_list and list only local users that need to have ftp access to the server.

Check the vsftpd.conf you may want to enable chrooting of users.
